Project dissemination for first-year students at Ekonomska šola Murska Sobota, Higher vocational schoo

On 25.10.2016 the first-year students of the programme Ekonomist at Ekonomska šola Murska Sobota, Higher vocational school attended the presentation of the EU project »Key Skills for Hotel Industry Staff« which was finished in autumn 2016. I showed them the FrontDesk programs and the applications which were created for smartphones and explained them how they worked. I also showed them the applications on my smartphone so that they could see for themselves and showed them where on the e-platform they could download them. Then I presented the Moodle e-platform for learning. I showed them all the modules and study material for A2/B1 language level and we did some exercises in English, Slovenian and German. I also mentioned that those modules are available in 12 European languages (DE, EN, ES, FR, GR, HR, HU, IT, LV, RO, RU, SI) several times. Then I presented the 6 modules for the higher language level B2/C1 available in English and explained the differences to A2/B1 level. We did some exercises so that they could see the difference for themselves. I mentioned a few times that the e-platform is available to anybody interested in languages and can be accessed by anyone who wants to learn or improve their language skills. I also emphasized that access to the Moodle learning platform is free. Before we finished I showed them where and how to register on the Moodle e-platform so that they could use the study material and do the exercises.

Project Presentation in University College Dublin, Ireland

University College Dublin (UCD), one of Europe’s leading research-intensive universities, was founded 160 years ago. Originally known as the Catholic University of Ireland and subsequently as the Royal University, the university became UCD in 1908 and a constituent college of the National University of Ireland (NUI). In 1997, UCD became an autonomous university within the loose federal structure of the NUI and UCD students are awarded degrees of the National University of Ireland.

From August 22 to 26, 2016, UCD hosted an international conference ECER 2016 "Leading Education: The Distinct Contributions of Educational Research and Researchers". ECER is the leading annual conference in educational research taking place in Europe. Each year it is attended by more than 2 000 participants. This year 2 595 participants registered for the conference. 

The work of the ECER conference is organised in central events (plenary sessions, panel discussions, central workshops, etc.) and in 32 different scientific networks dealing with topical issues in education.

Prof. Ineta Luka attended the conference and presented the project in Network 11 „Educational Improvement and Quality Assurance”. The report is available on: http://www.eera-ecer.de/ecer-programmes/print/conference/21/contribution/36994/

The participants highly evaluated the project outputs and the European added value the project has created.

MULTIPLIER EVENT - E2 - Primrose Publishing Ltd, UK at Edge Hotel School University of Esse

 

After much delay and uncertainty, the event finally took place at the Edge School in the University of Essex in Colchester on 17 August 2016.

The Edge Hotel School runs a BA course in Hotel Management. It is completed in 2 years so there are no holidays. They continue for the two years uninterrupted.

It means that the course is very intense and for this reason, languages do not form part of the main course.  However, students are encouraged to follow a language at the university, which is on the same site. 

August is the height of the holiday season in Britain and, despite invitations sent to many hotels, none of them were willing to spare any of their staff.

However the students of the Edge Hotel School do all their training in a real hotel:  the Wyvenhoe House Hotel which is one of the most luxurious and expensive hotels in the East of England. It has no staff of its own, apart for the Hotel Manager and Finance Manager. The students are the staff.

The participants included teachers from Essex University and the Edge Hotel School and some of their senior students. The photographer was only available for a specific length of time.

Each student spends a series of 7-week sessions working in the hotel doing different jobs, so they can be regarded as hotel staff. For this reason those attending the event entered their names on the attendance sheet, along with the vice-principal who was formally a hotel manager.

Since I am alone in Primrose Publishing, I had no option but to present every session on my own, although the vice-principal attended throughout and was as helpful as he could be. He is very enthusiastic about our materials and is keen to exploit them.

A young intern, spending his university vacation working at the Edge Hotel School, was able to take photographs.

The programme outlining the content of the event is attached. It is a real shame that none of the important invitees was able to attend.

I have agreed with the head of the University Languages Department that I will run a training session for them during the coming term so they will be able to see all the language material that we have created and which they will be free to use in their teaching.
